Hi I am Mandy and I am a Bookaholic

Hi.
I am Mandy
and I am, a bookaholic...
But it's okay really....
I am perfectly, 110% comfortable with my addiction.
(my addiction to ever so sweet & frothy soy lattes however may be out of hand!)

It's been a good reading year so far.

I've read these guys so far and I've enjoyed every single one.
I am hoping to average at least 4 books a month this year,
so I've been getting up a little earlier in the mornings
so I get my reading time in without diving into my studio time...
Where there's a will there's a way!
Especially when it comes to getting comfy with paper & words!

Chantilly Swish In Progress

I haven't done one of my old 'Nubbin' doll characters in awhile
and even though I won't be able to actually make her into one of my decorative figures till summer
I am enjoying her (and the snowy landscape from my upper studio window)...

Want to be one of the first to see her when she's completed?

Still Sore

I am still feeling sore to be completely honest.
Some days I still feel like falling to my knees.
Some days the pain is still so deep it takes my breathe away.
To everyone from the outside he was just a rabbit.
To us he was joy and sunshine and part of our heartbeat.
He was life and light and happiness and contentment all in one perfect beautiful furry body.
Now he's ashes and dust...
just like that...
he was here and now he's gone
but that's shockingly how it goes isn't it.
He's in a plain black box on my favorite rocking chair that gets the morning & afternoon sunlight...
as much as it kills to look at that box, we just can't tuck it away with the others quite yet....not yet.

We're still desperately missing every single little itty bitty thing about him...
the shape of his fuzzy ears, how his eyes changed colour from dark grey to light blue.
All the times we'd stretch out on the floor with him, trying to stay quiet, trying to contain the
laughter bubbling up from our tummies,
laughter born from the simple joy and sheer preciousness of having
our hands resting on his warm sweet tummy as he slept deeply & ran & ate in his delicious dreams.
The goofy little dances he'd do when we'd bring him his dinner.
The utter bliss in his eyes whenever Yuuji would groom him.
Everything...we're missing everything, for what is feeling like every minute of the day.
We are both missing our best friend.
We are both feeling disconnected from everything even though loveliness is abundant...
like when your sick and it feel like there's two parts of you that are just not moving in rhythm...
know what I mean?  Hmmm....maybe you don't,
but regardless, this is where I am....happy but sad...sad but happy...missing my Frenwyck
(I even miss saying his name!)

How are you doing these days?

Sometimes You Just Gotta

Schedules are I think, more often than not, a necessity for full-time artists...
especially those of us who have our studios in our homes
where we face a thousand distractions throughout the day!
Strict routines are key to getting everything done, or at least a fair amount done.

As much as I may want to, I have a really hard time keeping up with routines and schedules.
I am in fact envious of those who can invent their own schedules and keep to them,
for my headaches and migraines are typically the scheduler of my days.
But if I am having a good pain-free streak
I do often find myself snapping into a routine very easily & quickly
and I get SOOOO much done...but for me, that can sometimes be depressing too,
depressing because I realize how much further ahead I'd be if I could stick to a schedule!

But head pain aside...
even on the best of days where your feeling like a million bucks and like you could tackle anything,
Sometimes you gotta throw the studio schedules to the wind
and just let the day take you where it wants to go...

Maybe it's time to transfer some lovely local honey from your big honey pot to your smaller one...

Than maybe the day will find you sitting on the floor
to let your little furry buddies climb all over you as laughter bubbles up from your tummy...

Than perhaps because you skipped breakfast your tummy starts to growl on top of the bubbling,
so you take just 30 or 40 minutes to take in a healthy snack...

Than maybe for creative clarity, you find yourself cleaning up your workspaces...

...and letting your buddies help you out with some organizational ideas...

Than just maybe the day encourages you to snuggle that every so helpful bun for a short spell...

Than opps well my oh my look at that it's way past lunch time
and your starving so it's time for a late lunch with a book before heading into the studio
at least for an hour or two before the sun starts to go down!
And before you know it, the blue hour arrives...
it's time to start dinner...it's time to settle into the evening.
You reminiscence on the day you just had
and you do a mental check on what you've accomplished
and you realize with a happy heart that it's okay that you diverted from your plan...
it's more than okay because you enjoyed the day, you went with the flow.

Because as much as you want to have studio days full of accomplishments
you did accomplish something by filling your well.
And you filled your creative well by making your day as sweet and as good as possible
by dipping your ever so winter-dry toes into the lovely wet softening flow
of just letting things just be exactly how they wanted to be every moment of the day...
and how often do we do that!  Not often enough if you pay attention to how stressed everyone is...

So I am a firm believer, oh yes I am, I believe that sometimes you just gotta let go
and enjoy a day that meanders along slowly around unknown corners...
you just have to enjoy a day that slowly milks the sweetness out of every hour
as you embrace the beauty and simplicity of letting each task lead gently unto the next.

Ahhhhhh.....yes...sometimes you just gotta.

Emmett & Korra Sitting In A Tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G

So amidst our difficult times and sadness over these last few weeks,
we've had goodness and beauty too in the form of two of our babies falling in love!

We've bonded many rabbits in our 20+ years of rabbit parenthood...
Ella and Roo, took 6 months to bond.
Noodle and Hobbs took about 1 or 2 months.
Sisters Jinny and Hazel took several months to bond to Jaks
And once the boys Jaks & Roo lost their partners they actually bonded in about 1 month.
Teela and Yuuji took over 3 months...
and Teela, Yuuji and Frenwyck took over 2 years!

Well our newest couple took ONE DAY!!!
Now we happily get to sing the ritual
"Emmett & Korra, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G" ha ha.

We originally adopted Korra-Soleil because, well she was just meant to be part of our family,
but secondly because we wanted to try to bond her with Frenwyck.
She had a bonded mate before but he died when they were transferred from one shelter to another,
Frenwyck was clearly desperate for friends but Yuuji & Teela were just taking too darn long.
So we adopted her but her & Fren just didn't seem to like each other & they had to remain separate.

On the other hand,
whenever Emmett would get to see Korra-Soleil he would spring to life, literally!
He'd bounce and dance and put on quite the show in her honor...
and she respond in a way she never did for Frenwyck,
She would popcorn at the gate beside him and wiggle her tail at him constantly.
She was SO aggressive with all other buns, including us and Min is so mild mannered,
well we didn't even consider it at first...
than just before Xmas, when Fren was finally with Teela nd Yuuji fulltime,
I said 'Hey let's take those two for a ride in the truck and see how they do'.
Well that ride went super well,
in the same day we found ourselves going from the truck to the living room,
than to an even larger space into the hallway and that lead into time in their respective rooms
and well, it happened in one day...no fights, bonded straight away, it was love at first sight.
What I find funny is that these two rabbits were at the same 2 shelters together.
First one in Quebec and then the one in Toronto where we found them...
I joke that maybe they both speak French, ha ha!
It just goes to show that rabbits are soul mates just like people...
don't you just love that.

New Felt Fun

It's been awhile since I've worked with felt & stitchery and it felt good to get back into it a bit.
Here is my most recently finished lovely...isn't it pretty?

It can be put in a frame for the makings of a lovely little embroidered art piece,
or upon request I can make it into a one-of-a-kind brooch for you.

Flowers to Press

Most flowers that pass through this house get a 2nd life
as I press them in my homemade super nifty flower presses.
It is a process I love.  Somehow it's relaxing.

...It's exciting because you never know what you'll get,
Some flowers turn out amazingly, others rot out...
I am sure they'll make their way into mixed medias someday, atleast that's been the plan!

The Book Pile

Forgive my absence last week, I was suppose to be back to blogging as normal
but a super bad 3+ day long migraine kept me away from any semblance or a normal routine!

Today I wanted to share my 2015 book pile with you all...
it wasn't a stellar reading year but what can you do, life gets in the way sometimes doesn't it, ha ha!

These 4 I absolutely loved.
Alice Hoffman continues to be my favorite author with Sarah Addison Allen a close 2nd.

Though these 6 don't quite make me favorites pile, they were really good...

and these 4 I didn't care for so much, a couple of them felt like a real chore to get though in fact!
I am sure other people might love them but I did not.  To each their own opinion and all that jazz!

Did you read any spectacular books that you would recommend??
As always, feel free to do your own book pile post and share the link in the comments below.

Well I am off to more studio tidying and than an afternoon with watercolours.
As soon as it's sunny, I'll be able to take some photos and show you my latest work.
See you soon XO

New Adventures

Whew, I am finding this post difficult to start,
being the very first post after telling you about Frenwyck, it feels too normal somehow!
but also because I've had a super bad migraine all week,
but here I go, I'll keep it simple and short for both reasons.

I am diving into a brand new medium that I've been so anxious & excited to try...
weaving.

I have always loved wool and had a stash already started because I crochet a tiny bit.  Than...
my encouraging hon spoiled me rotten & surprised me with an amazing & beautiful new assortment.
Than my Mom went through her wool stash & gave me a whole wonderful whack.
And after a nasty experience of buying myself a loom & supplies from a shop online, having them
rip me off, steal my money and close up shop!  My honey & my Dad swooped in and saved the day by making me this lovely loom together (which makes it so much more awesome than a bought one).
I have a steep learning curve but my heart & fingers are buzzing with anticipation.

Goodbye Our Beloved

All animals are precious...all adoptions are special...
but now and than an animal is extra extra special.
They speak to your very core in a special unique way.
They are your soul mates in every way that a human being can be.

The very second you hold them to you,
from that first deep breathe of bliss you inhale,
from the very first time you hold your soul baby against your body, you know...
you just know straight away that losing them will be impossible.
Right smack dab in the middle of your wonderful blissful moment
is the very second that the dread kicks in...
it starts to warn your heart right from the get go, warn you against what?
the inevitable heartache to come I suppose...

It's a warning that when they leave you, a part of your light, a part of your heart will leave with them.

That yes, you'll forever carry their beautiful spirit with you.
They made you a better person.
They made you gentler, more patient, kinder...
they grew your heart by not doing anything at all but by being their own precious selves...
and how amazing is that...what an immense gift that is, absolutely.
You'll without a doubt carry this gift and them with you everyday.
You'll forever be wrapped in the warmth and beauty of having known them & their unwavering love.

But alongside these precious gifts, right beside all the beauty, you'll also now carry a hole.
You'll try to understand in every quiet moment,
why you couldn't have kept them with you forever...
because that's how much you loved them...
you loved them soooo much, surely, that was enough to keep them, somehow magically,
you feel this, even when life & logic screams at you that this is not it works...
The love blinds you and lets you feel like it's only natural and fair that things work this way!!

And so this is how we started our New Year...
Gut-wrenchingly heartbroken and steeped deeply in shock.
On New Years day, around 5:30pm our beloved Frenwyck, our sweet puppy
unexpectedly and suddenly left us.

We knew he wasn't feeling well,
but we thought it was just a tummy imbalance or a stubborn stasis case
and we knew he had a sore foot.
Months ago he had to have dental surgery....
the problems seemed to reappear again and again after that.
We can now trace our memory to this past summer and we did indeed notice that he was quieter,
not his usual playful self.  But still he did have his rambunctious silly days still which dipped us
right back into hope again and that he was once again back on track to being himself.

Than a few weeks ago, as you know, he had a near surgery...
there was a lump, than suddenly no lump.  We continued to keep a close eye on him.
In the past few weeks I had him in my arms more than not it seemed
which is why the new artwork was a lot less...
I was concentrating on our Puppy and on our Jaks,
we honestly and naturally just assumed that Jaks, with his heart condition,
would be the one we'd be saying Goodbye to.

Frenwyck loved to be held, sick or not, he was one of the most affectionate little bunnies ever.
He spent hours in my arms, especially the last month.
Espeacially the last two weeks, with him needing medicines and feedings
for again, what we just assumed was stasis and gas problems because everything else looked fine.

He would spend the evenings curled up in my arms, sleeping away,
usually after we just bathed his little tushy and tended to his sore foot with cleanings & blow-dries,
his little legs would twitch, his little mouth would munch away happily in a dream....
oh sure the tv was on, but I watched little of it...
I never tired of watching my babe & his precious precious face
as he dreamed away and slept deeply in my arms.

It was just after one of these delicious snugs of ours that all went terribly wrong.

I just put him on the ground after my hon coaxed me to 'put him down for awhile to stretch his legs'
but when I did so he fell over...I picked him up immediately and he slumped against my chest.
Jonathan immediately brought his head to his chest to listen and knew right away that his
heart beat was almost none existant...in seconds we were calling the vet...
but during those same seconds he went into a seizure and convulsions, kicking and whimpering
and well it was horrible for lack of a better word.

People have said 'Oh but what a gift, to hold your pet as they leave this world'
and I have the strength to do so simple because I can't imagine not doing so
but it's not beautiful in any way that I've been able to see...it's impossibly hard.
It's soul gutting.
But I don't want it to be...
if I am to continue on with this unique life with rabbits, I have to find a way...
a better way to handle myself and to deal with it
because every time, including this time with Frenwyck (and the 8 more times atleast ahead of us),
holding my babies as they pass, every single time,
whether it's by sudden harsh departure or by the gentler, calmer euthizing...either way...
it burns into me...
it marks my soul...
I can't shake it...
I can't forget it
and whiles I carry an immense amount of joy and happiness in everyday, yes,
I always have that, each and everytime, weighing heavily on me...
the spot where I last held my babies, where they last laid and breathed their last breathes.
It feels like a huge chest sized scorch mark, always hot to the touch, ready to wrench me into despair,
It's not a beautiful thing...it's an utter despartness of being completely completely useless...
all you can do is hold them tightly,
tell them you love them again and again and again...
whisper how happy you were to be their Mama...
tell them how proud you are of them, how strong they are, how precious they will forever be to you.
You try not to freak out and scream and cry as their bodies shut down, kick, shudder, cry...
it's simply awful and not beautiful at all.

We ran out into the winter and tried to get to the doctor as fast as we could
but he was already gone by the time we got there.
We think it was kidney or liver failure.
Likely liver failure since we knew when we adopted him that he had a sick liver...
we wanted to adopt him despite his health problem, even if there was nothing we could do for him
because as I said, he was our soul mate and we knew that from the first minute we saw him.

Most of the time I am strong...but sometimes I am not.
I didn't handle this one well.
Not at all.
I curled up in a ball and slept and didn't eat or drink for 3 days.
I only got up long enough in the morning and night to give Jaks his medicine and
Jonathan somehow managed to pull himself up long enough to do our basic
bunny duties like food, snacks, lights and potties.
I think beyond saying goodbye to this particular incredible soul,
it was the suddenness that just literally knocked us off our feet.
It took me a week to be able to leave the house
because leaving the house meant coming back to it that very first time when it hits you
that he's not inside there, waiting for you.

Ouch.
Ouch.
Ouch.
This one hurts a huge huge amount.
For the first time have no need to try to explain to those who simply won't understand.
For the first time have no desire to convince people of my truly broken heart.
The masses don't let us grieve an animal as it allows us to grieve a person
and whiles I don't like it, I understand that that's just how it is.
So I stick to myself, I stay with Jonathan and our other babies because they know me...
They know.  They understand
and it's to you, to you kindred spirits out there that I bear my broken heart too.

All of these photos of Frenwyck, I was saving, for future posts,
thinking I had plenty of time to share them, to show off our incredible Frenwyck, our Puppy.

What I am finding hard to deal with too is that Frenwyck just bonded just over a month ago.
Sure he was quick friends with Teela but Yuuji was jealous and gave him a hard time for ages.
Most of the time Yuuji was kind to him, letting him snuggle, giving him a million kissing
but we only 100% trusted them to be alone together just over a month before.
He had moved into Teela and Yuuji's part of the house....
he was so content, not wanting to go back to his old set of rooms, no way, he loved his new buddies.
He would jump up on the bed in the mornings, when the sun was spilling through the windows,
and he's stretch out, gazing happily into my eyes as I laid beside him, petting him, my snuggle bug,
I would bask in his beauty as he basked in the sun & snugs, sometimes he would stay for a whole hour, falling asleep again and again, warm from my hand and the sunshine...
These times were precious to me just like my nightly 8pm 'mama/teetee' snugs with Teela on the bed,
which much to her chagrin, he wanted to join in on too.

I walk around feeling abit like a ghost...
somehow lighter for having known this precious unique soul.
Better for having been him mama for a mere 3 years of his short 5 year life.
My heart is not itself right now.  I am angry that he had to leave so soon.
And whiles I've finally stopped crying,
We are simply heartbroken, grief-sticken and utterly lost with this sudden loss...
So bear with me, for awhile, I may not be my usual chipper self
for it's feeling so unexpected, so unreal...like life with our Fren was all but a dream...
a beautiful, fuzzy, joy-filled, love pouring over, sweet sweet, precious dream.

And I write all this because this blog of mine is suppose to be a positive spot.
So it's here that I retell the painful night knowing that in time doing so will help me heal.
It's here that I bear my heart to you kindred spirits who will understand my pain.
It's here that I will remember my baby with you all,
because over the last 3 years, you have gotten to know a tiny bit of him too.
So please light a candle for us...send us strength...
send our stardust baby a million beautiful wishes.

and thanks so so much for listening...I'll see you all next week.  XO.
