Hay In A Micro-Sanctuary

When the pandemic hit, our hay supplier was completely honest with us
and told us that he was having a hard time keeping up with his customers hay demands
and was also concerned with what was going to happen with the supply chain later on...
We appreciated that info, as the buns can go a spell without veggies & pellets etc
but they must have hay every single day, period.
So this is what $600 of top quality hay looks like!
We spend about $1400 at least on hay alone a year for 9 buns because we also supplement
this main kind here with other smaller bags of botanical, oat, alfalfa etc to liven up their options.

With 9 rabbits we go through 50 pounds of hay easily in about a month, sometimes more.
So we wanted at least a 6 month supply and
if any of our local bunny friends needed any we were able to share a little too.
We ordered only 2 boxes at a time about 2 weeks apart in consideration of the poor post carrier!
(Luckily our normal guy laughs and jokes with us when he brings these 50 pound boxes to the door).
We also got lucky in that the ladies at the store put bags of our usual Oxbow pellets aside for us too,
as apparently those flew off the shelves at the very beginning of this whole mess too.
We are staying on top of things, 6 month in, we still think there's going to another lock down!
It was scary at first, the ideal of not getting food for the babies and it was truthfully squirrely
for about 2 weeks at the beginning regarding fresh veg but we've managed...thankfully...phew!!!

Barnaby Fizz

So our little Barnaby has been waiting for us for awhile.

Long story short, I was involved in a rescue of a wild cottontail baby rabbit that did not end well
and it was super traumatizing for me (more on that later perhaps)
but since we were going to make room in our home for this wild bunny had they survived,
We realized we had room for the little bunny that a woman at the vet knew was being severely neglected and who needed a home.  She had been asking us to take this bun for over a year now.
So the day after I had to decide to euthanize the wild bun,
we called the woman and said we'll take the bun.
We didn't know what too expect, just a 2 year old girl.
We didn't have any need to meet the people who were neglecting this animal.
We set it up so the woman at the clinic picked her up for us
and we met at the animal hospital to pick up our new baby.
(didn't he look like a baby wookie!)

He was a ball of mats and knots, we couldn't even feel his body underneath all of it.
I have never seen matting this bad.
Before we got there, the woman at the vet cut the fur around his eyes because apparently he couldn't even see whatsoever either and his nails were all curled in on themselves so they cut the nails too.
He looked so so scared and just so so tired.

We realized that he couldn't move the front legs without it pulling on the back end so we decided to start shaving off the mess right away.  It took about 5-6 hours that first day to release him from his fur prison.  The poor little soul was covered in sores and rashes underneath it all
because the matting was so bad.
At this point we didn't consider him just a neglect case, to us this was a case of abuse.

Than shaving very very carefully around the bum area....one little testicle popped out than the other!
Our little bean had beans!
It wasn't a girl at all, it was very clearly a boy.
We originally, when we thought he was a girl, called him "Mimzy" so a name change was due.

The poor little guy was running into things, he just wasn't used to his proper eyesight.
He was also having a hard time with balance because he was just so used to being in a tight coat of knots that kept his mobility limited...even now about a month later, he still wobbles a bit.

At first he was a complete ball of nerves.
He shuddered when we touched him.
But it seemed as though he instantly understood that we were trying to help him
and he was so so good and patient for the shaving off of his fur.

Apparently he was never handled, just stuck in a small cage in the corner, forgotten.
He lived in that cage every day, he never got out!
Why on earth would anyone think an animal wants to live like that!
(just like our poor Lydia).
They want the freedom to move and express a joy for life just as we do...exactly as we do.

Unfortunately about the 3rd day after he came home, he almost died!
He was never given veggies or hay!
So we know to give new bunnies very small portions and only the basics at first.
Well even the tiny amount of veg we gave him was too much for his malnourished tum.
He went into full blown super bad stasis!
After what I just went through with the wild bunny, not being able to save him,
if I had lost Barnaby, I never would have forgiven myself.
My life would have changed forever, I don't know that I would have trusted myself with rescue again.
Thankfully, 2 sleepless night later, 3 emergency vet visits &
almost 1 grand later, he started eating again!

We still need to get him neutered.
He hasn't been fixed and as much as I don't want to put him through a surgery,
it's crucial for his best emotional well being and for his health
because unaltered rabbits have a very high risk of cancer.
So we've been giving him a chance to settle in, fatten up abit and than we'll book his surgery soon.

When he first came home, about a month ago now, we could feel every single rib.
Every single precious segment of his spine...like a little row of pearls.
We could even feel individual cecotrops in this track!  That's how skinny he was.

No animal deserves to be treated or kept in this way.
I just don't understand people, I just don't.
But I am just thankful that this woman at the vet recognized he needed out of that place
and that they agreed to give him over...I'd say give him up, but they clearly didn't care for him.

Am I hard on people?
Yes, absolutely because animals deserve so fucken more than what most people dole out to them.
Rescue life is amazing and rewarding but it's super hard too...
it's hard to keep positive about people and not hate everyone after you see what we see.

So this is Barnaby all shaved up.
He's possibly not a rabbit but some magical fluff of a mystical creature, part wooky, part magwai!

It's been an honor to watch him learn to trust his body.
To learn that he can move his body.
To watch him learn to play.
To trust us in taking treats.
Learning to eat hay.
He flies like lightening around the house like a race car driver, again and again for hours,
it's really pretty hilarious and all kinds of wonderful.
He's very very smart.
He's very affectionate.
He likes all of the buns in the house, except for Flynn and especially Higgins!
He just has an effervescent personality...hence the "Fizz"...our little Fizzy Pop.

We absolutely adore him...so so much.
He was meant to join our furry crew.
Maybe that cottontail came into my life every so brilliantly but briefly so that he could come home!

Welcome home Barnaby Fizz...welcome home you all kinds of wonderful baby you XO.

Betty Loves The Outdoors

We're still getting to know Betty...building trust with her is a bit trickier than normal
because we're dealing with her wonky teeth which I am fearing will always be wonky.

But one thing I do know about her already is that she's very very smart...that she loves it outside
& that she's a pro at stairs & has already learnt the way to the back deck all the way from downstairs!

Higgins Is At Home

Higgins is all settled in and doing really really well.
He's not half as nippy or dirty as the shelter peeps found him to be which is a huge relief.

He's still on a special diet because he still has lots of calcium in his pee

but he's looking super duper comfortable & content and that means the world to me to see.
I soooo highly recommend adopting from a shelter...
it's the best feeling to make such a difference in an animals life.

Korra Wants You To Know

Korra-Soleil told me that I should let all of you guys know about how's she's doing
since loosing her best friend Emmett aka Min-Min aka Meep.

She's a bit quieter, she's definitely lonely for her Min-Min
& so far she is saying no way no how to any new friendships (she's already lost 1 mate and 2 friends)
but she does like to lay out at the gate with Leisel, Yuuji and especially Henrie
but she definitely has a hate on for Flynn & Misa for reasons completely unknown!
But she's eating very well, she's enjoying the extra snuggles

She finds it a bit boring outside now without Emmett so she seems to prefer being inside more now
but she without a doubt loves having her Daddy working from his home office most of the week.

Misa's First Time In The Yard

This was Misa Adora's very first summer with us, as we adopted her in the middle of Winter last year.
She's a very nervous young girl so I was very proud of how brave she was her first time in the yard.

Unlike all the others (except for Flynn) she seems to prefer the back deck and indoors though.
People comment about her ears, she's a half lop, one ear up and one ear down indeed, she's perfect.

RIP Elsie Biggens

Our beautiful Elsie girl died in my arms on August the 5th.
We thought we were just going in for another check up on her breathing problems
but that we would be bringing her back home.
Everything happened so quickly...we brought her in because she stopped eating
all together just that morning and she just would not at all let us give her critical care.
We were just there at the doctors, she was quite active, she started to nudge the doctor
than suddenly she jumped up into my arms, which is very unlike her, and from there it all went horribly wrong.  Her breathing got super bad, so we brought her into the operating room to hold oxygen to her face, Henrie was with us all by her side, we than tried to so an x-ray but her breathing got worse and the 2nd time we put her back on oxygen it just became compeltely clear that she wasn't going to get better, she was struggling to breathe and I decided it was time to help her pass
but the doctor didn't even have time to get the injection,  I was holding her, she was calm but
clearly struggling for breathe, I kissed her, told her it was okay to let go that we would take care of her boy, that she was so strong and so good and that we loved her so so much and than she was gone.

The doctor thinks it was after all as the original diagnosis was, a huge tumor growing inside her chest wall surrounding her heart and airway because after being on meds for two months,
he feels that punemoia would have gotten better not worse and the way she was acting at the end
indicated the story we were were more scared of, cancer.

It's our 3rd loss in a year and a half, it's been feeling like I just can't do it anymore.
I'll forever miss holding her hand...we always held hands, my Elsie girl and I.
On the very first day we brought her home and I realized she liked having her front paw held,
I would sing her that song "I just want to hold your hand, Elsie...I want to hold your hand"
and could tell and feel that she loved it...it was our special thing.
I am so glad I got to be her mommy and I promise her that we'll take stellar care of her Henrie.
She was pure perfect love and we are better happier people for having known and cared for her.
She will always be part of my happy heart and joyful spirit, I'll carry her beauty in me forever.

Fuzzy and Fustrating

We were hoping that our sweet newbie Miss Misa and the Biggens would be fast friends
and at first it was looking really good...
she was kissing them, they were kissing her, they were playing together...
We did bonding in a small neutral area, than when all that went well,
we moved the bonding sessions to a bigger neutral area and again it went splendidly...

After two weeks of this routine we felt like it was time to try things in their respective rooms,
well of course when Elsie realized what we were up to,
that we wanted Misa to share their room downstairs & vice versa,
Elsie started to get mean and what Elsie does, her brother Henrie does!
So now we don't know if they will ever accept her.  We'll try again in a bit.
Argh why oh why can't rabbits just get along!!!

A Message From Yuuji

Yuuji wanted us to say hello for him...
(poor little guy seem to have bad allergies to hay of all things! and he hates his meds!)

He reminds us to love fiercely & loyally because you never know when you'll lose your loved ones
(but he's a tough boy and would be making his girl Teela proud with his spirit & strength)
XO

Snuggly, Soft, Sweet and Sleepy

This week I am working on these, a realistic colored pencil, an acrylic on wood & a teacup bun...

But you know, it's awfully difficult sometimes to be good and forge ahead with work and art

When you've got snuggly, soft and sleepy sweet souls beckoning to you to join them for a snug x 8!

SomeBunny's Watching

We have a secret little ramp behind our living room couch
so that the rabbits can watch the world pass by through their very own window.

It sure does do the heart good to come home and to pull into the driveway
to see one of our babes precious faces there in the window waiting for us.
